Optimism.
London. Summertime. The great british weather.
It rained everyday that summer.
That day I had enough and felt like, you know what? I will go and sit in my garden with my bikini on, under the rain and pretend its summer. If only I had a yellow balloon handy to pretend it is the sun.
That day sparked this whole series on Optimism and enthousiasm. It became a pretext to speak about eternal optimism, not giving in to circumstanmces but finding a way out, with a smile.
It is a candid, childlike, spontaneous endeavour, an urban fairytale where my weapon was a smile and a balloon. For the next couple of years, I carried yellow balloons with me, and when the setting felt right, I would take the picture, from Paternoster in South Africa to Marrakech in Morocco, to Brentwood Los Angeles in the USA, to Forest hill, South London in England.
